Cú Chulainn at the Ford
A boy-hero holds off an entire army alone — and is forced to duel the friend he loves.
When Queen Medb of Connacht marched on Ulster to steal a great brown bull, a curse lay on Ulster's warriors, sapping their strength. Only one could stand against the army: the seventeen-year-old Cú Chulainn.
By an ancient right of single combat, he challenged Medb's champions one at a time at a river ford. Day after day he fought and won, and the army could not pass.
To break him, Medb sent Ferdiad — Cú Chulainn's foster-brother, his dearest friend, the man he had trained beside. Neither wished to fight. For three days they dueled by day and tended each other's wounds by night, sending food and healing across the ford.
On the fourth day Cú Chulainn called for the Gáe Bolg, his terrible barbed spear, cast with the foot beneath the water. It struck home. Ferdiad fell, and Cú Chulainn caught his friend's body and wept, crying that all the cattle of Ireland were not worth this.
He held the ford until Ulster's warriors at last shook off their curse — a hero who saved his people, and paid for it with the one he loved most.
Historical Context
The centerpiece of the Táin Bó Cúailnge ('The Cattle Raid of Cooley'), Ireland's great epic, preserved in the 12th-century Book of Leinster from older oral tradition. Cú Chulainn's ríastrad (battle-frenzy) and his web of geasa (sacred prohibitions) shape a tragic hero whose greatness and doom are inseparable.
